La Orotava City Council is set to approve a record-breaking 68-million-euro budget for 2026, prioritizing social housing, local economic stimulus, and infrastructure development.

La Orotava City Council is set to approve a landmark municipal budget this Monday. Mayor Francisco Linares announced that the 2026 budget will reach 68 million euros—an increase of eight million from last year and the highest figure in 40 years. Felipe David Benítez, the head of Economy and Finance, credited this growth to strict fiscal discipline and sound financial management.

The budget prioritizes social investment and infrastructure. A key highlight is the one-million-euro commitment to affordable housing, which will support the 65 homes currently under construction in the San Antonio area. In the cultural sector, the government has shifted its focus: by halving the planned investment for the Teobaldo Power Auditorium, it has freed up funds to launch the new Atlante cultural space. This center will house the Municipal Archive, exhibition areas, and multipurpose rooms to support the town’s vibrant cultural scene.

To boost the local economy, the council is introducing a 500,000-euro consumption voucher scheme. Similar to successful programs elsewhere in Spain, this initiative allows residents to buy vouchers at a discount, with the council covering the difference to encourage spending at local businesses.

The broader investment plan also includes a wide range of public works and service improvements. These include road repairs, new parking spaces, updated bus shelters, and upgrades to local schools. Additionally, the budget covers the purchase of strategic properties, the restoration of historical heritage, enhanced security resources, and new sustainability and renewable energy projects.

La Orotava’s ability to increase its spending to 68 million euros, while still meeting national financial stability requirements, highlights the municipality's growing financial strength. This solvency will allow the town to move forward with major projects that were previously restricted by tighter budgets.
