La Laguna Wraps 25th World Heritage Anniversary with Anthem, "Punto Cero"
La Laguna concludes its year-long 25th World Heritage Site anniversary celebrations with events including the debut of its anthem and the opening of "Punto Cero," marking the historic city's center.
La Laguna is set to wrap up its year-long celebrations for the 25th anniversary of being named a World Heritage Site. The special events include the debut of its own anthem, composed by Diego Navarro, and the opening of "Punto Cero," a spot marking the exact center of the historic old town.
The City Council, along with the Cabildo de Tenerife, the Canary Islands Government, and the University of La Laguna (ULL), announced the events taking place from December 1 to 4 this Thursday, which will bring a year of commemorative activities to a close.
Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez said in a statement that the anniversary has helped "reaffirm La Laguna's unique role" as the only city in the Canary Islands with this special status. It has also encouraged discussions about the city's future development for the coming decades.
The program kicks off on Monday, December 1, with the International Conference on Diversity, Immigration, Sustainability, and Rights of Future Generations, held at Espacio Mutua Tinerfeña. This free conference will feature specialists like Edith Brown Weiss, Michelle Alonso, Nicolás Castellano, Angélica Dass, and Inma Perdomo.
Angélica Dass will also run "Humanae" workshops at Casa Anchieta on December 2, for educators and families, with limited spots available. Also on December 2, La Laguna's "Punto Cero" will be officially opened, pinpointing the exact center of the historic city's original layout.
On Wednesday, the side of the Cathedral will feature a public audiovisual show.
December 4, which is 26 years to the day since UNESCO made its declaration, will see the Leal Theater host the official closing ceremony, where the La Laguna Anthem will have its first public performance. The 25th-anniversary plaque will also be revealed in Plaza del Adelantado. Additionally, Angélica Dass's "Humanae" exhibition will open at Casa Anchieta and will run until January 25.
Meanwhile, several exhibitions are still running at various cultural venues across the city, including "Lagunear. Memory and Transformation," "Quintana in La Laguna," and "PIBADA 25." Also, on December 9, a photography exhibition about La Laguna will open in Madrid at the Canary Islands Government Delegation headquarters.
