La Laguna will spend over 6 million euros on historical buildings for the finance department and tourist center.
In La Laguna, local authorities plan to acquire two historical buildings for over 6 million euros to house the City Council's finance department and a tourist center.
In the city of La Laguna, local authorities have decided to make two important purchases for the community. They plan to spend over 6 million euros on two premises in the historical center. One of them will house the financial department of the city council, and the other will house a tourist center. According to city hall representatives, the next step will be to process the purchase documents.
The largest sum, almost 4.8 million euros, will go to the building known as Casa Franco de Castilla. It is located on Herradores Street, 81, and will become the new home for the city's financial department.
The city authorities decided to purchase it immediately. The money for this will be taken from the city budget: 3.3 million euros in 2025 and 1.5 million euros in 2026.
The explanation for the decision states that this is important for preserving the historical appearance of the city. In this way, the building will not fall into the wrong hands, will not be neglected, and will remain for future generations. In addition, locating a city institution there will help "revitalize" the historical center and save money on renting other premises.
Casa Franco de Castilla was built in the mid-18th century by the military man Matías Franco de Castilla. It is a typical example of the architecture of that time. On the facade of the building, you can see the family coat of arms and an image of the Virgin Mary. There was a fire there in 1970, but the building was restored in 2009.
Another acquisition is the Cruz Auñón building for almost 1.5 million euros. It is located on the corner of Obispo Rey Redondo and Viana streets and will become the new tourist center. The money for this will also be taken from the city budget: one million euros in 2025 and almost 500 thousand euros in 2026.
The explanation for this decision states that the city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, needs a modern tourist center. It will be located in the very center, near the main squares and pedestrian streets. This will help tourists get all the necessary information, as well as help preserve the historic building.
In both cases, the mayor of the city is authorized to sign all the necessary documents for the purchase. After all the papers are processed, both buildings will be officially entered in the municipal register.
