San Cristóbal de La Laguna will illuminate its streets with six million LED lights on November 28th, transforming the city into a "Christmas observatory" inspired by the Canary Islands' protected night sky.

This year, the Canary Islands' sky will be brought to life in San Cristóbal de La Laguna with a special Christmas light display. The city's decorations will be inspired by the stars visible from the islands, and the date the lights will be switched on has been announced.

The Christmas lights, named "The Sky of the Canary Islands," will feature six million LED lights and 3,500 decorative elements spread across La Laguna. The City Council explained that the design is a tribute to the archipelago's Sky Law, aiming to create one of the most beautiful light displays in the Canary Islands.

The inspiration behind the lights is Spain's unique 'Sky Law,' which protects the night sky quality in La Palma and Tenerife. This law ensures excellent conditions for scientific research by the Canary Islands Astrophysics Institute (IAC) by safeguarding the atmosphere from artificial light and radio frequencies. Besides protecting observatories, the law has served as a model for other regulations and encourages astrotourism in the region.

Fran Hernández, a councilor for La Laguna, stated, "La Laguna experiences Christmas in a very special way. Behind every light are many hours of planning, creativity, and teamwork. We do it thinking of the people of La Laguna and also of the thousands of people who visit us every year to enjoy a municipality that lights up with emotion and beauty."

With this theme, the council aims to transform La Laguna into "a true Christmas observatory, where history, science, and fantasy intertwine to offer a unique visual experience." The lighting designers, who began preparations in July, emphasized their commitment to creating "sustainable and responsible" lights, proving that beauty and environmental respect can go hand in hand.

San Cristóbal de La Laguna will officially switch on its Christmas lights on Friday, November 28th. This magical event will include performances, surprises, and a festive atmosphere to kick off the holiday season, a month before Christmas.

The following day, Saturday, November 29th, locals and visitors can enjoy the popular White Night. This special occasion offers a chance to do Christmas shopping at local stores, accompanied by concerts and activities throughout the charming streets of this historic Tenerife city.
