La Laguna Unveils Renovation Plans for San Carmelo Square
La Laguna City Council has unveiled plans to renovate San Carmelo Square in San Matías as part of a broader municipal urban modernization program aimed at improving accessibility and public spaces.
The redesign of San Matías is part of a wider plan to modernize La Laguna’s urban landscape. The City Council aims to complete the full renovation of San Carmelo Square by 2027. This project is one of four simultaneous improvements across the municipality, with the technical planning contract awarded last June for over 46,000 euros.
Currently in the design phase, the project aims to fix accessibility issues at the site, located at the corner of San Carmelo and San Andrés streets. The Councilor for Works, Ángel Chinea, recently presented the plans to about thirty local residents at the San Matías Citizen Center. The proposal focuses on making the most of the 225-square-meter space by prioritizing social areas rather than overcrowding the square with equipment.
The project extends beyond the square itself, including plans to improve nearby pedestrian paths and crosswalks to ensure better flow. Inside the square, the design incorporates more greenery to help regulate temperatures. Planners have decided against adding more children’s play equipment, as there are already plenty of these facilities nearby.
The Council is emphasizing resident feedback to ensure the final project meets the community's actual needs. The San Carmelo renovation is part of a larger regeneration program that also includes improvements to San Honorato Square, La Libertad Avenue in San Miguel de Chimisay, and the area behind the Ángeles Bermejo primary school in La Cuesta. Residents can currently submit their suggestions and feedback before the City Council finalizes the construction plans.
