La Laguna Transfers Land to Regional Government for New Specialized Healthcare Center

The La Laguna City Council has officially transferred a municipal plot to the Canary Islands Government to build a new specialized healthcare center. This move, finalized during a recent Local Government Board meeting, aims to ease pressure on the local healthcare system in one of the island’s most densely populated areas.

The 2,384-square-meter site is located on Avenida de los Menceyes, opposite the Museum of Science. With a buildable area of 8,720 square meters, the location was chosen for its excellent public transport links and proximity to the existing Finca España health center. Because the land is already zoned for urban use, construction can begin without lengthy planning changes. However, the agreement includes a clause stating that the land will revert to the city if the regional government fails to complete the project within five years.

Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez described the project as a vital step in addressing long-standing healthcare shortages in the area. The new facility is intended to go beyond primary care, offering diagnostic, rehabilitation, and specialist services to meet the needs of La Laguna’s growing population. While the site faces minor challenges—such as its proximity to a ravine and the nearby tram line—the City Council has confirmed that these factors are manageable and have already been accounted for in the planning process.

With the land transfer complete, the responsibility now lies with the Ministry of Health to move forward with construction. By repurposing land originally intended for educational use, the city is prioritizing essential services to better support its residents.
