The La Laguna City Council has partnered with the University of La Laguna to launch a comprehensive, multi-year restoration project for the city's iconic Father Anchieta monument.

Preserving historical heritage in UNESCO-listed cities requires a careful balance between physical conservation and administrative oversight. Recently, the La Laguna City Council began preparations for the comprehensive restoration of the Father Anchieta monument. The sculpture, created by Bruno Giorgi, requires specialized care after more than 60 years of exposure to the elements.

The four-year project is supported by the University of La Laguna (ULL). Through a formal agreement, the university will ensure that the restoration meets the scientific standards necessary to protect the artwork’s integrity. The Department of Cultural Heritage is leading the project, working alongside experts from the Faculty of Fine Arts and the Service for the Analysis and Documentation of Works of Art (SADOA). The consultancy firm Cumbre 8 Islas will manage the project's finances.

Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez emphasized that the council has a duty to protect this local landmark, noting the international significance of Father Anchieta and the importance of maintaining high technical standards during the restoration.

Because the monument features both metal and stone, the sculpture must be temporarily removed from its site. This is necessary for safety and to allow for chemical treatments, such as protective resins, which require a controlled environment that cannot be achieved in a public space. While the exact location of the restoration workshop has yet to be decided, the local government has promised to present the logistical plan to the Municipal Council of Cultural Heritage before any work begins. This project aims to restore the sculpture’s appearance and ensure its long-term stability, reinforcing the city’s commitment to preserving its artistic legacy.
