La Laguna to Launch Accessible Hiking for People with Disabilities in 2026
La Laguna City Council plans to launch an accessible hiking service in 2026 for people with disabilities, utilizing specialized equipment like joëlettes to enable them to explore nature.
In 2026, La Laguna City Council plans to launch a special hiking service for people with disabilities. The Social Welfare department is currently finalizing the details of this project. It's one of several initiatives introduced this year to help everyone enjoy nature, following the launch of accessible boat trips.
María Cruz, the Councillor for Social Welfare, explained that this is an 'inclusive program.' Its goal is to provide a much-needed service, giving people with any disability the chance to enjoy and learn from nature, exploring landscapes they normally cannot visit. This will help improve their quality of life.
The service will provide accessible transport, mountain guides, and trained instructors. María Cruz added that safety guidelines will be put in place for both participants and the staff supporting them. Each application will be reviewed individually. She noted, 'Depending on a person's disability, we will adapt the routes to suit the trails' accessibility, using special equipment for adapted hiking, such as harnesses and bars.'
Specifically, the service will use a 'joëlette,' which is a special chair designed for hiking on all kinds of terrain, even rough paths. Using a joëlette offers a unique way to experience nature, allowing people with physical disabilities, limited mobility, or other challenges to join in.
María Cruz concluded, 'This expands opportunities for nature-based leisure and environmental education. By adapting routes and teaching about environmental protection, we're making it easier for local disability groups to enjoy and learn firsthand about the Canary Islands' unique wildlife and plants.'
