La Laguna to Install Three New Self-Cleaning Public Restrooms in City Center

La Laguna is set to introduce three new self-cleaning public restrooms to its city center, addressing a long-standing request from residents. The City Council’s Department of Works, Infrastructure, and Accessibility is currently finishing the final technical preparations for these facilities, which will be located near Calle San Antonio, Plaza Doctor Olivera, and the areas around Plaza del Cristo and Plaza del Adelantado.

This project began in 2024 following feedback from the community. Installing these facilities was a complex task, as the team had to ensure the designs complied with the strict heritage regulations required for the city’s historic center. This involved close coordination between the Department of Works and the Urban Planning office.

The project prioritizes universal accessibility. Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez noted that the restrooms are designed for people with reduced mobility and include specific features for ostomy users. These adaptations were developed with guidance from the Association of Ostomy Patients of the Canary Islands, an organization that has previously partnered with the council on other public projects.

Councilor for Works, Ángel Chinea, confirmed that the structures are already in place and crews are currently connecting them to electricity and water supplies. Use of the restrooms will cost one euro, a fee intended solely to cover maintenance, cleaning supplies, and repairs.

This initiative marks a major step forward in providing essential services to the city. The local government plans to monitor the success of this pilot project to determine if the network of self-cleaning restrooms should be expanded to other parts of the municipality in the future.
