La Laguna will install three smart pedestrian crossings in high-traffic areas as a pilot project to significantly improve road safety and reduce accidents.

La Laguna is upgrading its city infrastructure by adding new technology to make roads safer. The City Council, specifically its Citizen Security Department, has signed a contract to install three smart pedestrian crossings. The council says this project aims to cut down on accidents in busy areas. This move follows a wider trend of cities using advanced systems to better protect people walking in urban areas.

These new crossings will be placed in key spots: Los Menceyes Avenue, César Manrique Avenue, and La Unión Avenue. These roads are located between the La Cuesta and Guajara neighborhoods. The project costs 28,771.52 euros, covering all expenses from buying materials to setting up and maintaining the systems. Unlike regular crossings, these smart ones use special technology to warn drivers early when pedestrians are present, making the roads much safer.

La Laguna's mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, stressed how important these modern systems are. He noted they will improve visibility and road safety, particularly for people walking in these busy areas. Badel Albelo, the Councilor for Citizen Security, explained that the locations were chosen after a joint review with the La Laguna Local Police. This decision was based on technical reports that looked at daily traffic volumes and past accident records in those areas.

This project is a trial run, designed to pave the way for more smart crossings in the future. Once these systems are working and data shows how effective they are, the City Council will consider adding this technology to other streets and avenues across the city. By focusing on smart and safe travel, La Laguna aims to become a leader in using new solutions for traffic control and protecting its citizens. The installation is planned for the next few months and marks a big step forward in how drivers and the city interact, putting residents' safety first in the busiest parts of town.
