San Cristóbal de La Laguna will host the 32nd 'Tour Universo Mujer' on November 22nd and 23rd in Plaza del Cristo, offering over 35 free outdoor sporting activities to promote women's sports and equality.
The San Cristóbal de La Laguna City Council recently announced that the 32nd 'Tour Universo Mujer' (Women's Universe Tour) will take place on November 22nd and 23rd in Plaza del Cristo. This event will transform La Laguna into a hub for women's sports, hosting the largest free outdoor sporting event of its kind.
The city center will become a large sports complex, offering up to 35 different activities for everyone to enjoy. These include sports like pelota, football, tennis, rugby, karate, gymnastics, hockey, mountaineering, climbing, badminton, archery, and boxing. Attendees can also take part in fitness and Zumba classes, and experience traditional local sports.
The presentation was attended by several key figures: Badel Albelo, Sports Councilor for San Cristóbal de La Laguna; Beatriz Vesperinas, Deputy Assistant Director of Women and Sport at the High Council for Sports; Tomás Pacheco, Iberdrola's institutional delegate in the Canary Islands; and Rubén González, the director of the 'Tour Universo Mujer'. Athletes Sara Dorta and Andrea González, who are the event's godmothers in La Laguna, were also present, alongside many representatives from the participating sports federations and clubs.
Councilor Albelo expressed his pride, stating, "We are very proud that La Laguna has been chosen as one of the venues for this great event for women's sports."
Beatriz Vesperinas noted that the 'Tour Universo Mujer' is closing its ninth season in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. She described its success as a blend of "sport, equality, and outdoor activities for all audiences."
Tomás Pacheco from Iberdrola highlighted his company's strong support for the initiative. "Iberdrola feels extremely comfortable with this initiative," he said. "We are happy to collaborate in this event in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. For me personally, seeing the 'Tour Universo Mujer' come to our region perfectly shows the boost Iberdrola has given to women's sports over the last ten years."
Rubén González, the event director, outlined the activities, which will begin on Saturday, November 22nd, at 5:00 PM. He commented, "The location is ideal for closing a successful season. Everyone who comes to Plaza del Cristo will find a different way to have fun and play sports. They can try boxing, archery, football, handball, volleyball, fencing, table tennis, pelota, and enjoy a Zumba marathon and traditional local sports."
Pilot Sara Dorta and Aguere volleyball player Andrea González are the godmothers of the Tour in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. Sara remarked, "Throughout my life, I've been involved in sports with very little female participation, which is why I really value projects like this." Andrea added, "I'm proud to be a godmother. It's crucial to highlight all the women who work hard every day to succeed in sports."
