La Laguna to Expand Valle de Guerra Cemetery Amid Burial Space Shortage
San Cristóbal de La Laguna has commissioned 120 new ossuary niches at the Valle de Guerra cemetery to address a critical shortage of burial space.
San Cristóbal de La Laguna is facing a shortage of burial space, prompting the local council to take urgent action. Officials have begun the process of commissioning 120 new ossuary niches at the Valle de Guerra cemetery to address the site's critical lack of capacity.
The project, which will cost 77,500 euros and is expected to take 90 days to complete, is a necessary response to the facility reaching over 90% capacity. Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez emphasized that this expansion is vital to maintaining essential services for the local community.
Looking ahead, the Department of Cemeteries, led by Cristina Ledesma, is planning a broader modernization of the site. This long-term project depends on updates to local urban planning regulations and is currently awaiting an environmental impact report from the Cabildo de Tenerife.
The council is working across departments to fast-track the construction of the new niches. While the long-term expansion plans move through the necessary administrative stages, officials hope this immediate addition will meet current demand and keep the historically significant cemetery operational for the people of Valle de Guerra.
