The La Laguna City Council has put a 1.37 million euro project to tender to construct a covered sports facility at CEIP Las Mercedes, fulfilling a long-standing community request to protect students from harsh weather.

After more than two decades of campaigning, the school community at CEIP Las Mercedes in La Laguna is finally getting a covered sports facility. The City Council has officially put the project out to tender, aiming to protect students from the harsh weather that often disrupts outdoor activities in this rural area.

The project has a budget of approximately 1.37 million euros and is expected to take six months to complete. Interested companies have until November 4 to submit their bids. The new structure will be built over the existing lower playground, featuring a roof with translucent panels to ensure the space remains bright and naturally lit.

Designed by the Canary Islands Ministry of Education, the facility will include multipurpose courts for basketball, handball, futsal, and volleyball, along with spectator seating. A key feature of the design is a separate entrance from Camino Viejo de Las Mercedes, which will allow local residents to use the sports courts outside of school hours.

This project is part of a 3.2-million-euro collaboration agreement between the La Laguna City Council and the regional government, announced earlier in 2025. The initiative is part of a broader plan to upgrade public school facilities across the municipality; similar work is already underway to enclose the sports court at CEIP El Ortigal.
