La Laguna Starts New Vehicle Depot, Old Site to Become Public Car Park
La Laguna City Council has begun construction on a new 3,000-square-meter vehicle depot near the Santiago Martín Pavilion to enhance traffic management and tow truck efficiency, with plans to convert the old depot site into a public car park.
La Laguna City Council has started building a new depot for city vehicles. This facility is important for managing traffic and improving how people get around the municipality. The City Council says the new depot will make it easier and more efficient for city tow trucks to remove vehicles. It will be about 3,000 square meters and located near the Santiago Martín Pavilion.
The project is expected to greatly improve the service's capacity and quality, offering a bigger and more practical space than the current one. Badel Albelo, the Councilor for Citizen Security, highlighted that the new location is better because it's easier to get to. It also has good public transport links for people who need to collect their vehicles.
Ángel Chinea, from the Public Works department, explained the initial progress. This includes moving earth and building a new retaining wall. Next week, they plan to lay a subbase before the final asphalt paving. The City Council is doing all this work itself. They first carried out a land survey to ensure the space is used as efficiently as possible. Due to the land's shape, the parking area will have two levels, connected by an access ramp and with a rock wall for support between them.
At the same time, the council is preparing to choose a contractor for the staff booth. This booth will need to meet the chosen contractor's needs and health and safety rules, including having air conditioning and other facilities. They are also making sure the area will be well-lit with spotlights.
Once this work is finished and the depot moves to its new home, La Laguna City Council plans to redevelop the current depot site in Las Mantecas. The goal is to turn this space into a new public car park, which is something local residents have often asked for.
