La Laguna Seeks Contractor to Finish Plaza Remodel Near Menis Church
La Laguna seeks a contractor to finalize the long-delayed remodeling of Plaza de Las Chumberas, adjacent to the Santísimo Redentor church, with a €159,411 budget and a three-month timeline.
La Laguna City Council is looking for someone to finish the remodeling of Plaza de Las Chumberas. This square is next to the community center and surrounds the award-winning Santísimo Redentor church, designed by the internationally recognized Tenerife architect Fernando Martín Menis. The church opened in May 2019.
The project has a budget of €159,411 (including tax) and should take three months to complete, according to the official tender documents.
The work involves small improvements to the 1,150 square meter area around the church. The goal is to complete the square and make it accessible to the public.
One task is to finish the drainage and rainwater collection system. For the pavement, they will use a non-slip concrete with a bush-hammered finish, which matches the church's style. They also plan to install a grating in the church's skylight area to eliminate a difference in pavement levels near the ramp.
The project will also upgrade the lighting by replacing the existing poles and lights, and installing new cabinets, electrical panels, and wiring.
The lighting will feature four large poles at the corners of the complex. The aim is to light the ground directly, keeping the church walls dimly lit. This way, the church's own internal light will shine outwards through its openings at night. The plaza area will have softer, ambient lighting with lights strung between the trees.
To prevent vehicles from entering pedestrian areas, bollards will be installed. The project also includes new urban furniture and railings. General improvements will be made to the existing area, such as reinforcing parts of the masonry wall, bush-hammering the pavement, and planting a new tree.
The remodeling of this square has been discussed since 2017, but the work has been delayed. This new tender will complete the work that began in late 2019 but was interrupted by Covid-19.
In early 2024, the city council announced that it was reviewing an updated plan for the project, prepared by Fernando Menis himself, to finalize the square's remodeling and adjust for current prices. While the original plan was to put the project out to tender and complete it last year, the tender was delayed until this month, October.
