La Laguna Secures Four Blue Flags for Coastal Excellence
San Cristóbal de La Laguna has been awarded four new Blue Flags and a "Blue Trail" distinction, reinforcing the municipality's decade-long commitment to coastal excellence and environmental sustainability.
San Cristóbal de La Laguna has once again cemented its reputation as Tenerife’s leader in environmental recognition. The Association for Environmental and Consumer Education (ADEAC) has awarded four new Blue Flags to the La Laguna coastline, certifying the excellence of its coastal management.
The municipality has held this status for over a decade, thanks to a consistent strategy of infrastructure upgrades. Key improvements—including new lifeguard towers, modernized rescue equipment, and the addition of accessibility tools like amphibious chairs—were essential in securing the awards for the natural pools of Bajamar, Jóver, and El Arenisco. Furthermore, the Camino de San Juanito has been named a "Blue Trail" for the sixth year in a row, a distinction that honors the restoration of ecosystems and the removal of barriers along ecologically significant routes.
These awards, granted by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) and coordinated locally by the Canary Islands Health Service, are highly rigorous. Each year, a committee of over thirty experts in public health and environmental conservation evaluates the sustainability of these sites.
During the official flag-raising ceremony, Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez noted that these awards are the result of ongoing investment in the coastline. Beyond their appeal to tourists, the flags require the municipality to meet strict environmental standards, ensuring that these natural spaces remain models of sustainable public use and preservation.
