La Laguna's Public Works Budget Jumps 18% to €22.7M

La Laguna City Council has committed €22.77 million to public works, infrastructure, and accessibility this year, an 18.54% increase, aiming to boost the local economy and tackle crucial projects like the Carnicería ravine channeling and road network upgrades.

La Laguna City Council has allocated 22,773,556 euros this year for Public Works, Infrastructure, and Accessibility. This sum represents 10% of the city's total budget and marks an 18.54% increase from 2025. Major investments include completing the channeling of the Carnicería ravine, renovating public buildings and spaces, and paving municipal roads. Additionally, over 767,000 euros is allocated for creating public parking areas throughout the municipality.

Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez emphasized that this increased budget reflects the council's priority on public investment in works and accessibility. He noted it would boost the local economy, create jobs, and address key road infrastructure needs in towns and neighborhoods. Ángel Chinea, the area's councilor, added that the budget carefully tackles the most necessary projects, prioritizing citizens' demands and enhancing public spaces.

The largest investment planned this year, at 2,519,951 euros, is for the channeling works of the Carnicería ravine. This crucial project aims to allow the municipal market to return to its former location in Plaza del Adelantado. Specifically, 150,000 euros is allocated for an international competition to design the new market.

Another major allocation, totaling 1.19 million euros, is for paving the municipal road network, renewing pipelines, and improving road surfaces and sidewalks. This includes 861,268 euros for planned actions in the Los Majuelos industrial estate, such as constructing a new roundabout connecting Gandhi Avenue with El Paso Avenue. The Cabildo is contributing one million euros to this project.

The renovation of the access road to Mesa Mota is also a joint effort with the Cabildo and Tegueste City Council, with a municipal contribution of 610,362 euros.

For public buildings, 1,097,000 euros is allocated for renovation, expansion, and improvement (RAM) works. This is in addition to 217,145 euros for accessibility in community centers, 209,968 euros for other public building actions, 100,000 euros for early childhood and primary education schools, and 150,000 euros for general accessibility works.

More than 570,000 euros will be allocated to renovating urban furniture, including new benches, waste bins, and bio-healthy elements. This year, the roofing of courts at CEIP El Ortigal (540,173 euros) and CEIP Las Mercedes (853,548 euros) will also be carried out.

The council department expects to tender the project for remodeling the old San Benito bus station into the new Local Police headquarters this year, with 119,128 euros allocated for its drafting. Meanwhile, the Plaza de Las Chumberas project has already been tendered and awarded, representing a 159,411 euro investment, with 69,000 euros included in this 2026 budget.

The Valle Jiménez Day Center, which will be located in the old infant school, has a budget of 558,461 euros for its execution once the definitive project is ready. Additionally, 148,000 euros is allocated for the creation of a Gypsy Culture Center.

Finally, 85,000 euros is allocated to restart the consolidation works of the San Agustín ruins, which have faced various setbacks. An additional 475,428 euros is for water-related matters.
