La Laguna Reports Significant Surge in Recycling Rates for First Half of 2026
La Laguna has seen a significant surge in household recycling rates during the first half of 2026, driven by increased public participation and improved municipal waste management strategies.
Waste management in La Laguna is reaching a turning point as residents show a growing commitment to the environment. Data from the local council shows that household recycling improved significantly during the first half of 2026, helping the municipality meet European circular economy goals for material recovery.
The figures show a steady increase in the use of recycling bins. The collection of lightweight packaging rose to 1,205,560 kilograms, a 15.45% increase compared to the 1,044,650 kilograms recorded during the same period last year. Recycling activity was particularly high in January, which saw a 25.27% jump, followed by further gains in March and June.
Paper and cardboard recycling saw even stronger growth, rising 18.46% year-on-year. A total of 1,786,230 kilograms was collected, up from 1,508,000 kilograms in the first half of 2025. May, January, and June were the most successful months for this category, with growth rates of 24.33%, 22.99%, and 19.67%, respectively.
This progress reflects both the residents' willingness to sort their waste and the success of municipal sustainability policies. Fran Hernández, the Councilor for Municipal Services, credited these results to increased public awareness and the council's efforts to improve collection logistics across the region.
Reducing non-recyclable waste is essential for meeting zero-landfill targets and lowering treatment costs. The local administration plans to continue this strategy by strengthening public information campaigns and optimizing resources to ensure that recycling rates remain high throughout the rest of the year.
