La Laguna Proposes Las Mantecas Site for New CD Tenerife Stadium
La Laguna Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez has proposed building a new Club Deportivo Tenerife stadium on a 40,000-square-meter plot in Las Mantecas as a more efficient alternative to the long-term renovation of the existing Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium.
La Laguna City Council has proposed a major new plan for sports infrastructure in the Tenerife metropolitan area. Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez intends to ask the Island Council to use a 40,000-square-meter plot in Las Mantecas for a new Club Deportivo Tenerife stadium. This site is already slated for a new multi-purpose pavilion, and the mayor believes adding a stadium would create a significant sports hub.
This proposal comes amid ongoing debates about how best to invest public funds. The Island Council currently plans to renovate the existing Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium in stages through 2040, at a cost exceeding 50 million euros. However, Mayor Gutiérrez argues that the current stadium needs a permanent solution rather than long-term, piecemeal repairs. He believes the Las Mantecas site is a better option because the city already owns the land, avoiding the high costs and legal hurdles of land expropriation, while also offering better traffic management than the center of Santa Cruz.
The city is currently moving forward with the necessary urban planning changes for the Las Mantecas site, located near the Faculty of Fine Arts. The environmental assessment for this plan is now open for public review for 45 business days. Once this phase is complete and the island’s environmental authorities issue their report, the City Council can proceed with the final approvals.
The planned pavilion is designed to be modular, allowing it to host elite local sports, international competitions, and large-scale cultural events. While the city has not set a firm construction date due to the project's technical complexity, officials say the process is moving quickly. By offering this land, the mayor is inviting the Island Council to collaborate on a major sports complex, arguing that building a new facility is a more efficient use of public money than the proposed long-term renovations.
