The La Laguna Municipal Market has completed a comprehensive modernization project, featuring enhanced accessibility, sustainable climate control, and digital infrastructure to support local commerce.

The recent renovation of the La Laguna Municipal Market marks a major step forward in modernizing the space to meet 21st-century standards for accessibility and energy efficiency. Completed in early 2026, the project addresses essential maintenance while ensuring the building complies with modern regulations, creating a more inclusive environment for everyone.

Work at the Plaza del Cristo has significantly reconfigured the layout. Key changes include moving flower stalls onto stepped platforms to clear walkways for pedestrians. New flooring and wider side aisles have also been installed to improve safety and make it easier for people with limited mobility to get around. Additionally, all three restrooms have been fully renovated, including a new unit designed for full accessibility.

Sustainability was another priority. To combat rising temperatures, the City Council installed custom awnings and blinds on the glass dome and optimized the climate control systems. These upgrades reduce the greenhouse effect inside the building, making it more comfortable for both merchants and shoppers.

The market is also embracing digital tools. New occupancy sensors will provide the local government with precise data on consumer behavior, which will help guide future efforts to boost local business. Alongside these physical and digital upgrades, the council is drafting new regulations to replace the market’s outdated legal framework.

Safety protocols have already been put to the test; a recent evacuation drill successfully cleared over a hundred people from the building in less than three minutes.

While the market continues to offer its traditional selection of local meats, cheeses, and fruits, it is also diversifying. New businesses, such as natural juice bars and craft breweries, are being introduced to attract a younger audience. The market is open seven days a week, with operating hours starting at 6:00 a.m. from Tuesday to Saturday, and 7:00 a.m. on Sundays and Mondays.
