La Laguna Launches Tender for 50 New Public Housing Units in Tejina

La Laguna is reaching a turning point in its housing policy. The City Council and the municipal housing agency, Muvisa, have launched a new tender to build 50 public housing units in Tejina. This move aims to restart a project that stalled in late 2025 by updating the budget to match current market conditions.

The project has a starting budget of 8,896,222.42 euros—an increase of over 25% from the previous attempt—and is expected to be completed within two years. Funded by European ERDF grants, the Canary Islands Housing Institute, and local resources, the development will be built on a 3,586-square-meter plot on Calle Auchón de Tagarafate. The planned building will span nearly 7,500 square meters and feature two- and three-bedroom apartments, along with garages, storage rooms, and common areas designed for energy efficiency and accessibility.

This project is significant because the municipality has not built new public housing in over a decade. With demand rising, local authorities are now following a multi-year strategy to triple the current stock of 70 affordable rental units. The plan includes both new construction and the renovation of existing properties in areas such as La Piterita, La Cuesta, and La Salud Alto–El Rocío, as well as a new development in Gracia.

In total, the city is managing over 81 million euros in active or upcoming housing projects. Alongside these new builds, the Council is investing in private residential regeneration, most notably the renovation of 438 homes in El Cardonal. The broader housing policy aims to ensure families spend no more than 30% of their income on rent. By leveraging urban development rights and working with community organizations, the city hopes to address the shortage of affordable housing across the islands. Once construction in Tejina nears completion, tenants will be selected based on social criteria.
