La Laguna has launched a pilot program using surveillance cameras and automated audio reminders at key waste collection points to curb illegal dumping and promote better recycling habits.

La Laguna is upgrading how it manages urban waste. The City Council’s Municipal Services department is launching a pilot program to tackle illegal dumping and damage to street bins at key waste collection points. The strategy combines technology with public education by installing four surveillance units equipped with cameras and loudspeakers.

Led by councilor Fran Hernández, this new approach moves toward active supervision. The systems will do more than just record; they will play automated audio reminders to help residents follow proper waste disposal rules. This method has already proven successful in other Spanish towns, where similar surveillance and acoustic alerts have helped keep streets cleaner.

While the project includes a monitoring component, the main goal is to encourage better recycling habits. The City Council notes that while most residents follow the rules, some continue to leave bulky items on the street. To address this, the council is reminding residents that they can use a free collection service for furniture and appliances by calling 900 102 925.

The council will evaluate the pilot program after a trial period to see if the cameras and alerts effectively change behavior. This initiative is designed to support regular cleaning crews and promote shared responsibility, which the council believes is essential for keeping the city’s neighborhoods clean and healthy.
