The San Cristóbal de La Laguna City Council has launched a summer program offering 500 spots for residents over 50 to combat social isolation and promote physical health through coastal activities.

Tackling loneliness among people over 50 has become a top priority for welfare policy in the Canary Islands. The San Cristóbal de La Laguna City Council has launched its latest summer revitalization program, which aims to boost both physical health and social connection in the coastal areas of Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo.

The program runs from July 6 to August 28 and offers 500 government-funded spots. To sign up, you must be a resident of the municipality and at least 50 years old. Registration opens exclusively through the municipal website on Tuesday, June 16, at 9:00 a.m. and closes on Wednesday, June 24, at 11:59 p.m.

To ensure everyone can participate, the city is offering free transport for residents living further inland. Ten specific bus routes will connect various neighborhoods to the coast, removing the geographical barriers that often prevent people from joining local welfare programs.

Participants will be split into two groups of 250, rotating between the two coastal locations so everyone can enjoy both settings. According to Councilor for Citizen Participation Fran Hernández, the goal goes beyond simple summer leisure; it is about preventing social isolation and encouraging physical activity. Participation in this program does not affect your eligibility for other social services or trips organized by the City Council.

These community initiatives are vital as Spain works to support an aging population. By combining outdoor exercise with the chance to build new friendships, the La Laguna City Council hopes to combat sedentary lifestyles and social disconnection, helping older residents enjoy a better quality of life this summer.
