San Cristóbal de La Laguna has partnered with the University of La Laguna to launch a scientific, 84,793-euro restoration project for the Father Anchieta monument to address decades of environmental decay.

San Cristóbal de La Laguna is entering a critical stage in the preservation of its sculptural heritage. The local government has approved a partnership with the University of La Laguna (ULL) to fully restore the Father Anchieta monument—a massive structure standing over five meters tall and weighing more than four tons.

The project has been allocated a municipal budget of 84,793.57 euros, an increase from original estimates due to an expanded scope of work. This initiative goes beyond simple cosmetic repairs; it uses a rigorous scientific approach to address the wear caused by 60 years of exposure to the elements. Recent testing has identified surface issues, such as corrosion and cracks in the metal joints, though the monument's internal structure remains stable.

The agreement, which includes an additional 6,875-euro contribution from the university for public outreach, sets out a plan to monitor the statue through 2028. Researchers will use advanced techniques—including photogrammetry, color analysis, and X-ray fluorescence—to stabilize the materials and ensure the long-term durability of both the sculpture and its granite base.

Local officials emphasized that this restoration is strictly a technical project and is separate from any ongoing debates regarding the monument's future location. Overseen by the Municipal Council for Cultural Heritage, the work aims to protect the statue from further natural decay. The university was chosen as a partner to ensure that specialized scientific expertise is used to preserve this iconic piece of the city’s landscape, which was first unveiled in 1960.
