La Laguna Launches Major Sports Calendar to Boost Community and Economy
La Laguna is launching a comprehensive annual calendar of sports events backed by a 600,000-euro investment to boost community engagement and promote public health through over 25,000 expected participants.
La Laguna is set to boost its social and economic life through a new calendar of sports events, according to the municipality’s Autonomous Sports Agency (OAD). Department head Badel Albelo announced that the town now invests 600,000 euros annually in public sports management. These events are more than just athletic competitions; they involve a team of 150 professionals and a network of volunteers, all working to promote public health and community spirit.
The season kicks off on May 10th with the 25th La Laguna City Half Marathon, which expects to draw nearly 2,900 runners. The schedule continues throughout the year, ending with the traditional San Silvestre Lagunera. The program blends classic sports with modern urban events, including the 21st Bajamar-La Punta Swimming Crossing, the long-running Bajamar 3x3 basketball tournament, and the multidisciplinary "El Cristo Urbano" festival.
The lineup also features several popular local races, such as the Bajamar Cross, the Race for ALS, the Legua de San Benito Abad, and the races in El Cristo and Taco. The council aims to attract over 25,000 participants annually through these initiatives. By prioritizing these events, the La Laguna OAD is highlighting the importance of sports infrastructure in the Canary Islands and using physical activity to bring the community together and make better use of public spaces.
