La Laguna Launches €75,000 Grant Program to Help Youth Obtain Driver’s Licenses
The La Laguna City Council has launched a 75,000-euro grant program to help young residents aged 18 to 30 cover the costs of obtaining a driver’s license to improve their employment prospects.
For many young people, the high cost of getting a driver’s license has become a major hurdle to finding work. To help, the La Laguna City Council has launched a new aid program to cover the costs of obtaining a Class B license. As announced in the Official Gazette of the Province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife (BOP) on October 12, the council has set aside a budget of 75,000 euros for this initiative.
The program, supported by the Canary Islands Federation of Driving Schools (FEACA), will award grants of up to 500 euros per person based on a competitive merit system. Priority will be given to specific groups, including those enrolled in the National Youth Guarantee System, job seekers, individuals with disabilities, and members of large or single-parent families. The financial situation of young people who are living independently will also be considered.
Approved by the Local Government Board on October 6, the program covers expenses incurred since January 1, 2026. This includes driving school enrollment, exam fees, study materials, and both theoretical and practical lessons.
Interested applicants have 20 calendar days from the date of the official publication in the BOP to submit their requests. All necessary forms and documentation can be found on the City Council’s official website.
Sergio Eiroa, the Councilor for Education and Youth, explained that the initiative aims to improve job prospects and mobility for residents aged 18 to 30, as a driver’s license is often a requirement for employment. Because the total budget is limited, grants will be awarded strictly according to the council’s established criteria.
