La Laguna Launches €46,000 Urban Renewal Plan for Four Public Squares
La Laguna City Council has allocated over 46,000 euros to launch a three-month design phase for the comprehensive remodeling of four public squares to improve infrastructure, accessibility, and community functionality.
La Laguna City Council has officially launched a plan to remodel four public squares, marking a significant step in the city’s urban renewal strategy. The council has set aside over 46,000 euros to design improvements for sites at San Honorato, San Carmelo in San Matías, Avenida de La Libertad in San Miguel de Chimisay, and the area next to the CEIP Ángeles Bermejo school in La Cuesta.
This project addresses long-standing requests from local residents who have struggled with deteriorating public spaces. Ángel Chinea, the Councilor for Works, Infrastructure, and Accessibility, emphasized that the goal is to go beyond simple aesthetics. The planned upgrades include essential infrastructure work, such as replacing sewage, rainwater, lighting, and telecommunications systems, alongside repaving, better signage, and more greenery.
The design phase is expected to take three months. During the first month, technical teams will present preliminary plans to local residents to ensure the final designs reflect the specific needs of each neighborhood. The remaining two months will be used to finalize the technical documents.
Each location has unique requirements. In San Honorato, the focus is on adding street furniture and improving shade for the dense population. In San Carmelo, the priority is removing architectural barriers to improve accessibility, with potential plans for new playgrounds and sports facilities. For Avenida de La Libertad and the area near CEIP Ángeles Bermejo, the goal is to reorganize the space to make it more functional and inclusive for the community.
