La Laguna City Council has launched a €387,976 infrastructure project to resolve recurring flooding in Tejina by upgrading drainage systems and diverting rainwater into the Las Cuevas ravine.
La Laguna City Council has launched a €387,976 infrastructure project to stop the recurring flooding on Camino de la Costa in Tejina. The area’s current drainage system is outdated, relying on a combined network of storm drains and sewage pipes that cannot handle heavy rainfall, especially with the added runoff from the main road between Tejina and Tacoronte.
To fix this, the council will install new collectors and grates to intercept rainwater before it reaches the flood-prone area, diverting it instead into the Las Cuevas ravine.
The five-month project presents some logistical hurdles. Because private land prevents direct access in certain spots, engineers have had to design the new system to collect water from higher-elevation roads. This will require temporary traffic detours, lane closures, and work on sidewalks and curbs. Once the construction is complete, the affected roads will be resurfaced to restore normal traffic flow.
This project is a vital step in modernizing the town’s infrastructure to better handle the increasingly heavy rainfall seen across the islands. By upgrading the drainage across four main streets, the council aims to resolve a long-standing issue for local residents.
