La Laguna City Council has invested over 350,000 euros in summer maintenance projects to upgrade safety, accessibility, and infrastructure across thirty local schools and community facilities.

La Laguna City Council has invested 352,897 euros to prepare local schools for the new academic year. While the Canary Islands regional government oversees education and property ownership, local councils are responsible for the ongoing maintenance and repair of school buildings.

To avoid disrupting classes, the city’s Department of Works, Infrastructure, and Accessibility carries out major repairs during the summer break. These projects are planned in close coordination with school administrators, who identify the most urgent needs for their facilities.

This year, work was completed at approximately thirty locations, including infant and primary schools, the San Cristóbal Adult Education Center (CEPA), and several senior centers. Improvements focused on safety and functionality, ranging from roof waterproofing and plumbing repairs to electrical upgrades and carpentry work. The council also improved accessibility by installing new ramps and refurbished sports areas by repainting courts and repairing fencing.

A key priority this year was addressing the impact of heatwaves. In response to requests from school staff, the council is working to provide more shade in playgrounds. While installing these structures is a significant, long-term project requiring coordination with the regional government, a major step was taken this summer with the installation of a 182-square-meter shade structure at CEIP Fernando III El Santo. This project complements similar efforts by the Canary Islands government at other schools, such as CEIP Punta del Hidalgo.

The maintenance program reached a wide range of facilities across the municipality, including the following schools: Aneja, Montaña Pacho, La Verdellada, Camino Largo, Camino La Villa, San Benito, Aguere, San Matías, Santa Rosa de Lima, Nava y Grimón, Ángeles Bermejo, Ayatimas, Las Chumberas, Los Andenes, Cardonal, San Luis Gonzaga, Narciso Brito, San Bartolomé, Clorinda Salazar, Las Mercedes, El Ortigal, Las Mantecas, Lope de Guerra, Princesa Tejina, Carboneras, and Bajamar, as well as social centers in San Benito and the Northeast.
