The second "Mujeres a Escena" festival is currently running at La Laguna’s Teatro Unión Tejina, featuring a week of performances and workshops dedicated to promoting gender equality and professional visibility for women in the performing arts.

The second "Mujeres a Escena" (Women on Stage) festival is currently underway at the Teatro Unión Tejina in La Laguna. This week-long event has become a vital platform for addressing the ongoing gender inequality within Spain’s performing arts. More than just a showcase for performances, the festival aims to boost the professional development and visibility of women across all creative and technical roles in the industry.

Organized by the La Oveja Negra Cultural Association with support from the La Laguna City Council, the festival answers a long-standing call to increase female representation in directing, playwriting, and management. Running through Sunday, November 24, the event features a mix of training workshops, dance, storytelling, and theater.

The festival kicked off with Paula Fuentes’ photography exhibition, Rebelando la escena (Revealing the Scene), and a cabaret workshop led by Irene Pérez. Training continues on Tuesday with an improvisation session by Iratxe Menalbert. On Wednesday, the festival highlights the audiovisual arts with the premiere of Mujeres tras el telón (Women Behind the Curtain), a documentary created for the event, followed by the play Hilos de Igualdad (Threads of Equality) by Inspirarte Teatro.

The final days of the festival feature a diverse lineup of performances:

  • Thursday, Nov 21: Todo comienza con un paso (Everything Starts with a Step) by Tejina en Danza.
  • Friday, Nov 22: Una historia entre miles (One Story Among Thousands) by Colorín Colorada.
  • Saturday, Nov 23: Entretelas by Esther Cabeza.
  • Sunday, Nov 24: Performances by MiArteFactor at noon, followed by the closing show, Frida. ¡Viva la vida! by The Glow Producciones.

Tickets are available through Tickety.es and the theater box office. For full schedules and event details, visit the websites for the Teatro Unión Tejina or the La Oveja Negra Cultural Association. The organizers hope this festival will continue to serve as a powerful tool for closing the gender gap in the cultural sector.
