La Laguna Hosts Annual Seniors' Festival Featuring Inclusive Accessibility Measures

La Laguna celebrates its senior community this Monday with the annual Seniors' Festival at Plaza del Cristo. Starting at 5:30 p.m., the event—organized by the city’s Social Welfare and Festivities departments—expects to welcome nearly 2,000 people as part of the ongoing festivities in honor of the Christ.

The afternoon’s entertainment offers a diverse mix of music. Highlights include ballads from Shaila Dúrcal, the musical satire of the long-running La Palma group Trío Zapatista, and a grand finale by the iconic Catalan rumba band Los Manolos. Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez emphasized that the event is about more than just entertainment; it is designed to ensure that the senior community remains a central part of local public life.

The festival is also setting a high standard for accessibility. The city has introduced an "Orange Point" to remove physical and sensory barriers, featuring sign language interpreters, guides for the deaf-blind, magnetic induction loops, sensory backpacks, and noise-reduction technology. These measures ensure that everyone, regardless of their abilities, can enjoy the celebration.

To accommodate the event, traffic restrictions will be in place around Plaza del Cristo starting at 5:00 p.m. until the performances end. Beyond the music, the festival highlights the city's commitment to active aging, helping to combat social isolation and bring different generations together during the patron saint celebrations.
