La Laguna's Acaymo Municipal Day Center has introduced "Estrellita," a robotic cat designed to combat loneliness and stress by offering companionship and enhancing the well-being of older adults.

With growing concerns about older people feeling lonely and stressed, the Acaymo Municipal Day Center in La Laguna has introduced a new solution. The center, managed by the Department of Social Welfare and Quality of Life, has brought in a special robotic cat. Users have affectionately named it 'Estrellita'.

This robotic cat is designed to offer companionship and keep people engaged. Unlike a real pet, it's hypoallergenic, doesn't need food, and never has to go to the vet. It works using sensors that react to human touch and movement, aiming to give a similar experience to interacting with a live animal.

María Cruz, the Councilor for Social Welfare, highlighted the positive results seen with similar robots internationally. Studies have shown they help older adults with their thinking and senses, and can even improve their fine motor skills and coordination through interaction. Cruz stressed that loneliness often leads to mental health issues like depression or anxiety. She explained that 'Estrellita' offers emotional support, comfort, and a constant sense of companionship, all of which contribute to the users' quality of life.

This isn't the first time La Laguna has used advanced technology in elder care. Late last year, the Acaymo Center also brought in a robot for physical rehabilitation. These efforts highlight La Laguna's commitment to using artificial intelligence and innovation to support human care. The center's professionals always supervise these therapies closely, ensuring technology helps promote active aging and, most importantly, creates positive experiences for everyone.
