La Laguna Deploys Advanced Robot to Boost Senior Activity and Care
La Laguna's Social Welfare Department has introduced an advanced robot at the Acaymo Senior Day Center to aid older adults in physical and mental rehabilitation, marking a first for the Canary Islands in utilizing such technology to support and gather data on elderly care.
The La Laguna City Council's Department of Social Welfare and Quality of Life has bought a new, advanced robot to help older adults stay active. This is part of a program to support the elderly in the area.
The robot is designed for physical and mental rehabilitation. It was tested this Friday at the Acaymo Senior Day Center, which provides daily care for older residents in La Laguna. Once fully in use, the robot will collect important information and help stimulate the center's users.
La Laguna's mayor, Luis Yeray Gutiérrez, highlighted how robotics and artificial intelligence are becoming more common in professional fields and are greatly benefiting groups needing support, whether due to age, dependency, or disability.
He also mentioned that this project, the first of its kind in the Canary Islands for this department, will help gather essential data and track the progress of users at the Acaymo Center. This will allow them to further improve their programs and activities with their team of specialists.
The councilor for Social Welfare and Quality of Life, María Cruz, explained that the main goal is to see how these new technologies impact users and if they can be used in other areas. She stressed that the robot is not meant to replace the staff but to support them, making care more efficient and gathering information through its camera and biometric features.
With the help of center staff, the robot can lead individual and group therapy sessions focusing on movement, thinking skills, and social interaction. It also has a system that monitors progress during exercises and provides feedback on performance.
The robot will guide users through activities set by the staff, offering corrections and encouragement. It can also adjust its approach based on the individual's needs.
