La Laguna Council to Invest €2.49M in 7 Football Fields
The San Cristóbal de La Laguna City Council's sports department will invest €2.49 million to upgrade seven local football fields in 2026, modernizing facilities and enhancing sports activity as part of a five-year strategy.
The San Cristóbal de La Laguna City Council, through its sports department (OAD), has announced a 2.49 million euro investment. This money will be used for a complete upgrade of seven local football fields. The work is planned for 2026 and is part of a five-year strategy. The goal is to modernize important sports facilities in the area, responding to a long-standing request from local clubs and users, and supporting the high level of sports activity in the municipality.
The city council explained that the upgrades will happen through a "renting" agreement for new artificial turf and sports equipment. Sports Councilor Badel Albelo highlighted this approach as key for medium-term planning and making the best use of public funds. It will also ensure regular maintenance of the facilities, preventing one-off fixes that don't last. The fields chosen are spread out across the region to ensure fair access. They include locations such as Verdellada, Islas Canarias, Montaña Pacho (two fields), Perico Vargas, Las Chumberas, and Punta del Hidalgo. The main aims are to improve athlete safety, enhance the quality of play, and make the facilities last longer, especially given their frequent use by clubs, schools, and official competitions.
This project aligns with La Laguna's strong reputation as a leading sports hub in the Canary Islands. The area hosts many different events throughout the year, from popular local gatherings to official competitions. Councilor Albelo credits this lively sports scene to consistent planning and teamwork with sports federations, clubs, and event organizers. The annual calendar features well-known events like the San Silvestre Lagunera, the K42 Anaga Marathon, and the Night Race, alongside local community sports and charity events such as the Women's Race.
La Laguna's sports approach relies on strong partnerships with local community groups. These groups play an active role in annual planning and the management of facilities and events. A key part of this strategy is supporting local, amateur sports, encouraging people to get active from a young age and helping to bring the community together.
Beyond direct sports participation, this busy sports scene also has a significant social and economic impact. Many events attract participants and their companions from other parts of the island, which boosts local businesses like shops, hotels, and restaurants. The Sports Councilor confirmed the city's dedication to continue supporting this vibrant sector through careful planning and by directly addressing its needs.
