The La Laguna City Council has partnered with the University of La Laguna to provide 12,000 euros in funding for students building an electric racing car for the international Formula Student competition.

Tenerife is strengthening the link between academia and local industry through a new partnership. The La Laguna City Council has signed an agreement with the General Foundation of the University of La Laguna (FGULL) to help fund student participation in the international Formula Student competition. The council is providing 12,000 euros to cover the costs of materials, electronics, and mechanical parts needed to build an electric racing car.

This initiative highlights the growing importance of hands-on, challenge-based learning in Spanish universities. Signed by Mayor Luis Yeray Gutiérrez and FGULL manager Julio Brito, the agreement offers engineering and science students a multidisciplinary environment to work in. This approach allows students to apply their theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, preparing them for the technical and regulatory demands of the sustainable automotive and electric mobility industries.

Councilor for Education and Youth, Sergio Eiroa, emphasized that the project aims to align higher education with the needs of the job market. By participating in the competition, students develop essential skills beyond the classroom, such as project management, teamwork, and complex problem-solving.

This partnership is part of a wider effort by local authorities to retain young talent by supporting applied research. By providing access to specialized equipment, the La Laguna City Council hopes to help students build a competitive vehicle for international circuits, further establishing the university as a hub for technological innovation in the Canary Islands.
