La Laguna City Council has approved a major renovation of the Francisco Peraza stadium, implemented a ban on large digital advertising screens in the historic center, and called for urgent infrastructure improvements to the Valle de Guerra sanitation network.

La Laguna City Council has reached several key agreements that will reshape the municipality’s sports facilities and urban planning.

The most significant decision involves the Francisco Peraza stadium, commonly known as La Manzanilla. Following a proposal by Unidas se puede and a joint amendment from the PSOE and Coalición Canaria, the council has approved a major renovation project. This plan is made possible by the recent purchase of a 15,733-square-meter plot next to the stadium.

The expansion will allow for a complete redesign of the site, with a focus on athletics and new recreational spaces. A key technical feature will be the construction of a dedicated area for throwing events—such as the javelin, discus, and hammer—which will protect the football pitch by separating the different sports. According to Sports Councilor Badel Albelo, the work will be carried out in phases to ensure that local clubs can continue their training and competitions without interruption. The plan also includes replacing the end stand with a new structure that will provide space for local organizations and areas for traditional Canarian sports, such as juego del palo, salto del pastor, and garrote.

Beyond sports, the council addressed urban identity and sustainability. To protect the historic center’s aesthetic, officials approved a ban on large digital advertising screens. This measure, proposed by Drago, aims to prevent the proliferation of franchise signage, though it faced opposition from Vox. Additionally, the council expressed its support for local creative and audiovisual professionals as they navigate the challenges posed by artificial intelligence.

Finally, the council addressed local water infrastructure. Following a motion by Unidas se puede, the council is urging the Island Water Council to include Valle de Guerra in the regional Hydrological Plan. This move aims to fix long-standing issues with the sanitation network and stop wastewater discharges in the area through coordinated action between government bodies.
