La Laguna City Council has closed all municipal swimming areas, including popular spots like Bajamar and Punta del Hidalgo, due to dangerous sea conditions and a coastal weather warning for strong waves.

The La Laguna City Council has closed all swimming areas in the municipality due to dangerous sea conditions. This decision comes amidst a coastal weather warning for the Canary Islands.

The closure affects popular spots like Bajamar, Punta del Hidalgo, Jover, and La Barranquera. It's a safety precaution because of strong waves hitting the northern coast. The council urges everyone to be extremely careful and stay away from these areas while the bad weather continues.

Images shared by the City Council on social media show waves constantly crashing into Bajamar's natural pools, completely covering the areas usually used for swimming. The council also posted: "⚠️ We are closing all bathing areas in La Laguna due to poor sea conditions. We ask that you exercise extreme caution."

This closure aligns with a coastal weather warning issued by the Canary Islands Government's General Directorate of Emergencies. The warning has been active since 7 PM on Saturday, January 31st.

The alert covers El Hierro, La Palma, La Gomera, the northern and western coasts of Tenerife and Gran Canaria, and all of Fuerteventura and Lanzarote, including the entire Jandía coast.

Forecasters expect waves of 2.5 to 3 meters (about 8 to 10 feet) coming from the northwest, mainly as long, powerful groundswells. These waves will be far apart, with a 13-second period, and will combine with high tides. This combination significantly increases the risk in exposed coastal areas.
