The 2026 Lagunero Sports Gala at the Leal Theatre celebrated La Laguna’s athletic achievements while emphasizing the community’s commitment to social responsibility, inclusivity, and local sports history.

The 2026 Lagunero Sports Gala, held at the Leal Theatre, offered a clear look at the current state of sports in La Laguna. According to the city’s Autonomous Sports Organization (OAD), the event was more than just a celebration of competitive wins; it was a formal recognition of the community and social foundations that keep local sports thriving.

The list of award winners showcased a wide variety of disciplines. From motor racing stars like Enrique Cruz and the Rally Ciudad de La Laguna to rising boxing talent Martín Chávez Cedrés, the range of talent was clear. Meanwhile, the Aguere Volleyball Club and La Laguna Tenerife continued to prove their status as major players, representing the municipality at the highest national and European levels. The inclusion of the Race for ALS and the International Day of Women and Indigenous Sports also highlighted a shift in local sports management, showing a growing commitment to social responsibility and cultural identity.

The ceremony also featured emotional tributes to key figures in local sports history. Honorary mentions were given to basketball officiating legend Jesús León Arencibia and Felipe Hernández Gil, whose work was vital to the success of the Juan Ríos Tejera Pavilion. These tributes served as a reminder of the essential role that dedicated individuals play in managing public sports facilities.

Badel Albelo, head of the OAD, used the event to highlight the strong connection between La Laguna’s landscape and the hard work of local families and clubs. This reinforces the city’s goal of using sports to bring people together. By balancing professional success with inclusive values and local traditions, the gala highlighted a sports community that is both well-supported and deeply committed to its citizens.
