La Laguna Cathedral Lights Up for Heritage Anniversary Finale
La Laguna's Cathedral of Our Lady of Remedies was illuminated by a videomapping show last night, narrating five centuries of the city's history and concluding its 25th-anniversary celebrations as a UNESCO World Heritage City.
Last night, an audiovisual show lit up the side of the Cathedral of Our Lady of Remedies. It transformed the historic building into a cultural stage for everyone, locals and tourists alike. Starting at 7:30 PM, and running for more than two hours with multiple showings, the projection told the story of five centuries of the city's history. This event also marked the end of celebrations for La Laguna's 25th anniversary as a World Heritage City.
The show brought the stone walls to life, illustrating the Cathedral's architectural journey and celebrating La Laguna's unique status as the only city in the Canary Islands recognized by UNESCO. This visual storytelling project was organized by the Department of Cultural Heritage, with help from the Diocese of Nivariense. It highlighted La Laguna's special global importance as a unique city layout, a blueprint for cities in the Americas, and an example of Renaissance ideals.
Adolfo Cordobés, the Councillor for Cultural Heritage, said that "this important monument has become a canvas of light and sound, telling the story of our city's evolution and showcasing our identity and unique cultural strength." He added that "this videomapping, a highlight of the 25th-anniversary celebrations, allowed us to experience over 500 years of history in a new and exciting way."
The project gave the Cathedral new meaning as a vibrant symbol of the city. It created an engaging and emotional story, aiming to teach people and make them more aware of how important our heritage is.
