La Laguna Begins Final Phase of Urban Improvements at Most Holy Redeemer Church

The final phase of urban improvements around the Church of the Most Holy Redeemer in La Laguna is now underway. The city council has begun work to finish the square next to the church and the local civic center, fixing previous construction issues that had prevented the public from using the space.

The project, which costs 141,333 euros and is expected to take three months, is part of the municipal Integrated Action Plan and is funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). The 1,150-square-meter design is intentionally understated to ensure it does not distract from the church’s unique architecture—a world-renowned design by Fernando Martín Menis that has received international awards.

Ángel Chinea, the Councilor for Works, Infrastructure, and Accessibility, noted that this project resolves the technical and administrative hurdles that previously stalled the site’s completion. The plan includes improving the drainage system and installing a metal frame over the skylight to create a level surface for pedestrians. The team has selected bush-hammered concrete for the pavement, which provides a non-slip surface while matching the aesthetic of the church.

The new lighting strategy features four perimeter poles that cast light onto the ground rather than directly onto the church walls. This allows the light spilling from the church’s own openings to define the area’s atmosphere at night. Through these improvements, the La Laguna City Council aims to turn an unfinished site into a functional gathering space for the residents of Las Chumberas, successfully blending the public square with the landmark church, which has been in use since 2019.
