La Laguna Begins Emergency €270k Tejina Wall Repairs
La Laguna City Council will begin urgent €270,000 repairs this Wednesday on a retaining wall in Tejina, Camino de Arico, declared an emergency due to its risk of collapse and threat to nearby homes.
The La Laguna City Council is starting urgent repairs this Wednesday on a retaining wall in Tejina, specifically on Camino de Arico. This is because the wall is at risk of collapsing. The repair work is expected to cost around 270,000 euros.
The city council explained that their own report found the wall, which separates the road from an orchard below, is slowly giving way due to pressure from the ground. Cracks can be seen easily.
What's more, the ground is weakening near homes on the other side of the street, which could affect their foundations.
Ángel Chinea, the Councilor for Public Works and Infrastructure, said these repairs are "necessary" right away. Because of this, the local government has declared the work an emergency. There's a "real risk" that two parts of the wall could collapse, which would be dangerous for people and property.
A technical report from December 9 noted that cracks first appeared in the road's surface and were fixed as routine maintenance. However, when these cracks came back and got wider, the wall was inspected. This inspection revealed fractures in two sections of the wall, caused by ground pressure.
The emergency work will involve knocking down about 30 meters and 20 meters of two sections of the retaining walls, along with the damaged parts of the street. After that, two new reinforced concrete walls will be built. The ground will be refilled and compacted to make the road stable and safe again, and the asphalt will be relaid.
The city council stated that the affected areas will be fenced off to stop vehicles from entering.
Work will begin on the first section of the wall. This will allow heavy vehicles to get through to repair the second section. During this initial phase, there will be no traffic disruptions for the rest of the neighborhood.
