La Laguna Begins Drainage Construction to Advance Las Chumberas Redevelopment
The La Laguna City Council has begun construction on a 172,660-euro rainwater drainage system in Las Chumberas, a critical infrastructure requirement for the official handover of the residential area to local families.
A major hurdle has been cleared for the Las Chumberas residential area in La Laguna. The City Council has announced the start of construction on a new rainwater drainage system, a vital step toward finally handing over homes to local residents. Work on the project began on March 11 and is designed to manage rainwater in the absence of a planned island-wide collector system that has yet to be built.
The project, which costs 172,660 euros, is expected to take four months to complete. It was added to the existing construction contract following approval from water, mining, and urban planning authorities. This drainage system is a mandatory requirement for the City Council to officially accept the residential area.
The Municipal Housing and Services Society (Muvisa) confirmed the system’s effectiveness through soil and drainage tests. This progress runs alongside the final work on two residential blocks, which are on track to be finished in the first half of this year.
The Las Chumberas redevelopment is a complex, multi-agency effort involving the Ministry of Housing, the Canary Islands Government, the Tenerife Island Council, and the local City Council. As work continues, the City Council is calling for a meeting of the oversight commission. The goal is to plan the next stage of the redevelopment and ensure that rental support for relocated families remains in place beyond its current October 2027 expiration date.
These latest infrastructure improvements, combined with recent progress on property registrations and legal notices, are key to finalizing this long-awaited urban rehabilitation project.
