La Laguna Begins Construction of New Roma Sociocultural Center
The La Laguna City Council has launched a €340,000 project to construct a new sociocultural center in La Cuesta dedicated to supporting and integrating the local Roma community.
La Laguna is taking a significant step toward addressing a long-standing commitment to its Roma community. The City Council has officially begun the administrative process to build the Canary Islands Roma Sociocultural Center in the La Candelaria area of La Cuesta. With a budget of over 340,000 euros, the project is set to move through a technical planning and construction phase over the next eight months.
The center will be located on Rector José Escobedo y González Alberu Street, a site chosen to support a community that has been part of the municipality since the mid-20th century. While sociological studies show that the Roma population in the Canary Islands is generally well-integrated into schools and society compared to other regions, many still face significant challenges. This new facility aims to help bridge those gaps.
Local officials view the center as a vital tool for promoting inclusion and fighting discrimination. The project is designed to be more than just a building; it will be a versatile space for educational, cultural, and community activities. The plans specifically highlight the importance of supporting Roma women, recognizing the essential work of groups like the Romi Kamela Nakerar Roma Women's Association in advocating for the community.
The Department of Works and Infrastructure has outlined a timeline that includes three months for the initial design and five months for the final execution plans. Ultimately, the center is intended to be a welcoming space for all residents of La Laguna, serving as a hub that preserves Roma cultural identity while encouraging active participation in public life and empowering its members.
