La Guancha Opens Tender to Restore El Roque Road Following Years of Closure
The La Guancha City Council has launched a €467,904 tender to restore the El Roque road, aiming to resolve long-standing traffic disruptions caused by a major 2022 landslide.
After nearly four years of closure, the restoration of the El Roque road in La Guancha is finally entering its final phase. The City Council has officially opened the tender for the rehabilitation of this vital route, which connects the town center to the coast, residential areas like Las Cucharas and Tierra Costa, the local cemetery, and school transport routes for the Plus Ultra school.
The project, which has a budget of 467,904 euros fully funded by the Cabildo de Tenerife, aims to end the isolation caused by a major landslide in October 2022. The planned work is expected to take four months and goes beyond simply clearing the debris—a task that previously required 15 trailer loads—to include a comprehensive stabilization of the hillside.
The technical plans include creating an access path to secure the slope, installing a new drainage system for rainwater, resurfacing the road, and updating signage. The project also covers the relocation of utility lines and the repair of private property boundaries damaged by the collapse.
Getting to this stage has been a complex bureaucratic process. Mayor Alejandro Herrera explained that the current administration inherited a difficult financial situation, as the original project lacked funding after initial surplus budgets expired. Furthermore, the Cabildo’s Historical Heritage department required a preventive archaeological study due to the potential for historical remains in the area. While the study has authorized the work, it mandates that an archaeologist must supervise all excavations.
Interested companies have until July 29 to submit their bids. While local officials remain cautious about potential challenges—such as fluctuating material costs or the risk of the tender receiving no bids—the launch of this project marks a major milestone. Once completed, the work will restore normal traffic flow and resolve one of the municipality’s most pressing infrastructure problems, which has disrupted the daily lives of residents for years.
