The public and school library in La Guancha, Tenerife, is celebrating its 50th anniversary with a month of community events, marking over three decades of successful cooperation between municipal and educational authorities.

The public and school library in La Guancha, Tenerife, is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month. This milestone highlights the success of a unique partnership: since September 1992, the library has combined municipal resources with those of the Jerónimo Morales Barroso Secondary School, making knowledge more accessible to the entire community.

The library’s history mirrors the town’s own development. It opened in 1976 at the Sociedad XVIII de Enero with 3,500 books and 510 registered users. After a brief move to Domingo Hernández Street in the 1980s, it settled into its current home within the school. This location has allowed the library to grow beyond its original purpose, becoming a vital hub for local culture.

To mark the anniversary, the City Council has organized a month-long program of events designed to bring different generations together. Activities include themed exhibitions, creative workshops, storytelling sessions, and author meet-and-greets. The celebration will conclude with an official event featuring music and artistic performances, reflecting the council’s ongoing commitment to promoting reading and local culture.

Libraries like this are essential to rural and semi-urban areas, ensuring that everyone has equal access to information. The library’s ability to adapt to new locations and changing user needs serves as a perfect example of how cooperation between municipal and educational authorities can keep local public services thriving.
