La Gomera Hosts Sixth Annual Fred. Olsen Alps de La Gomera Tournament
La Gomera is hosting the sixth annual Fred. Olsen Alps de La Gomera, a pivotal Alps Tour event featuring over 100 international golfers competing for promotion to the Challenge Tour while boosting the local economy.
La Gomera is once again the center of the golfing world this week as it hosts the sixth annual Fred. Olsen Alps de La Gomera. Now a staple of the Alps Tour, the tournament runs from Thursday to Saturday at the Hotel Jardín Tecina. It is more than just a high-level competition; it is a vital stepping stone for golfers hoping to reach the Challenge Tour, with three direct promotion spots on the line.
Beyond the sport, the event is a key driver for the local economy. Officials from the Island Council and the San Sebastián de La Gomera City Council have praised its role in boosting tourism. However, the Canary Islands Golf Federation is calling for more public and private support to host similar events across the archipelago. They suggest that attracting "Legends" category circuits could bring significant economic benefits and draw a high-spending demographic to the islands.
On the course, over 100 athletes from 15 countries are competing, including the top 13 players in the current circuit rankings. The Spanish contingent includes experienced professionals like Álvaro Quirós and Alejandro Cañizares, alongside contenders such as Pablo Alperi and Mario Galiano. Much of the local attention is on Tenerife’s Álvaro Hernández Cabezuela, who leads a group of five professionals and nine amateurs following his strong performances in Almería and Andorra.
The Tecina course, which has previously hosted eight Challenge Tour events, has adjusted its layout to increase the difficulty. Players expect that success will come down to precise tee shots and effective putting. Unless the weather turns, low scores are expected. For Hernández Cabezuela, this tournament is a crucial chance to climb the rankings and stay on track for his goal of finishing the season in the top five.
