The La Cuesta neighborhood has launched a comprehensive urban renewal project to modernize infrastructure and revitalize four key public spaces through a community-driven design process.

Urban renewal in the La Cuesta neighborhood is entering a key stage with a new plan to revitalize four major areas. The Department of Public Works has announced that the project goes beyond simple cosmetic changes; it will modernize essential infrastructure, including sewage and drainage systems, lighting, telecommunications, paving, and green spaces.

Councilman Ángel Chinea’s department has set a three-month timeline to complete the project designs. The process includes a community-focused approach: for the first month, officials will draft plans and present them to residents for feedback. This input will then be used to finalize the technical designs over the following two months.

Each site has been chosen to address specific local needs:

  • San Honorato Square: The goal is to add more street furniture and increase tree cover to provide better shade and cooling.
  • San Carmelo Square: Plans focus on removing barriers for pedestrians and creating new play areas for children and space for physical activity.
  • La Libertad Avenue: The area will be reorganized to be more inclusive while making better use of existing landscaping.
  • Area behind CEIP Ángeles Bermejo: The intersection of José Domínguez Dorta and Machado y Fiesco streets will be redesigned to encourage social interaction through new public facilities.

This initiative reflects a broader trend of local governments prioritizing public spaces to improve community life. By upgrading basic services and creating more sustainable environments, the city aims to better meet the needs of residents and improve their overall quality of life.
