Spanish MMA pioneer Juan "El Guapo" Espino has officially retired following a storied career that saw him transition from traditional global wrestling styles to becoming the first Spaniard to secure a UFC victory.

Juan Espino is more than just a successful athlete; he is a unique talent whose ability to adapt to different styles is unmatched in Spanish sports history. His career shows a remarkable transition from traditional regional wrestling to the global stage of mixed martial arts (MMA).

Espino’s journey began in Canarian wrestling, where he reached the highest level of the sport. His drive to master new techniques led him to compete internationally in various traditional styles, including Leonese wrestling, Breton gouren, Tatar wrestling, Korean ssireum, and Bangladeshi kabaddi. He also made history in Senegal, where he became the first foreigner to be officially recognized in Senegalese wrestling (laamb), a sport deeply rooted in local culture and ritual.

Known as "El Guapo," Espino eventually moved into professional MMA, building on his extensive background in grappling and jiu-jitsu, where he had already won world and continental titles. His big break came in 2018 when he won The Ultimate Fighter: Heavy Hitters, earning a spot in the UFC. In 2020, he became the first Spaniard to win a UFC debut by defeating Jeff Hughes. He finished his time in the organization with 10 wins and two losses, with his final fight taking place in April 2021.

After a chronic knee injury forced him to retire in April 2023, Espino was honored at a special event titled "The Farewell" at the Gran Canaria Arena on March 23, 2024. During the event, he showcased his diverse skills by performing exhibitions of Canarian wrestling, Senegalese wrestling, and MMA. His career remains a testament to how a strong foundation in traditional sports can lead to excellence in modern competition—a level of mastery that no other Spanish athlete has yet achieved on such a global scale.
