The Cabrera Pinto Hall in La Laguna is hosting a solo exhibition of Jiri Dokoupil’s "soap bubble" paintings, showcasing twenty large-scale works created in the Canary Islands through May 31.

The Cabrera Pinto Hall in La Laguna is currently hosting a solo exhibition dedicated to Jiri Dokoupil, offering a deep dive into the career of one of Europe’s most influential contemporary artists. The exhibition, which runs until May 31, arrives in Tenerife following a successful stint at the La Regenta Art Center, where nearly 4,000 visitors explored the artist’s unique creative process.

The exhibition centers on Dokoupil’s signature "soap bubble" technique, a method he has refined over the past thirty years. Curated by Carlos Díaz-Bertrana, the show features twenty large-scale works created in the Canary Islands since 2020. More than just visually striking, these pieces reflect on the uncertainty of the creative process, balancing the artist’s control with the unpredictable nature of his materials.

Dokoupil has been a key figure in contemporary art since the 1980s, when he was a member of the Mülheimer Freiheit collective. Throughout his career, he has consistently challenged artistic trends, rejecting the rigid conceptual rules of the late 20th century. His nonconformist approach has led him to experiment with unconventional materials—including soot, tires, and organic fluids—to prove that original expression is still possible.

For Dokoupil, using bubbles is not about referencing the past, but about finding a new form of abstraction that speaks to the fragility of life. He notes that the technique is incredibly difficult, as factors like humidity and air currents mean that every canvas is a delicate balance between chance and intention. To mark the artist's visit to the island, the gallery is hosting a special event this Saturday, offering a rare chance to learn about his philosophy and his lifelong commitment to technical experimentation.
