Jesús Gallego to Present Avianca Flight 011 Novel in La Laguna
Radio broadcaster Jesús Gallego will present his new novel, Náufragos del cielo, at La Laguna’s Convent of Santo Domingo this Monday to explore the historical memory of the 1983 Avianca flight 011 disaster.
La Laguna’s cultural scene is highlighting the intersection of non-fiction and historical storytelling this week. This Monday at 6:00 p.m., the former Convent of Santo Domingo will host the launch of Náufragos del cielo (Castaways of the Sky), the second book by radio broadcaster Jesús Gallego.
The novel offers a fictionalized account of the 1983 Avianca flight 011 disaster. The crash, which occurred near Madrid’s Barajas airport while the plane was traveling between Paris and Bogotá, remains one of the most tragic events in Spanish aviation history. The book reflects a growing trend in Spanish literature: using novels to preserve the memory of major 20th-century tragedies.
Supported by the La Laguna City Council, the event marks Gallego’s return to the island following the success of his debut, Herencias. The presentation will be moderated by journalists Manoj Daswani and Óscar Herrera. Ángel Víctor Torres, the Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, will also join the author for a discussion. His participation highlights the event's focus on the connection between literary narrative and historical memory.
